This is a nice end-grain Red Oak spindle.  The grain is fairly straight and is slightly inclined to the long axis of the block.  The block is air-dried to 10-12% moisture content.  

There is a corner patch of bark and wane at one end, near the annotation.  I've taken a few photos of this so that you can see in detail.  If turning this piece, you have a good 1.5" diagonal of solid wood at that end.
