This is a nice end-grain Red Oak spindle.  The grain is long and fairly straight.  The block is rough-cut and air-dried to 10-12% moisture content.  

This block has a 50/50 mix of heartwood and sapwood.  There is a bark and wane area along one edge.  It will turn off readily when you bring the block to round.
