This is a long end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. It is entirely heartwood.  The grain is gently swirling and slightly inclined to the long axis of the block.  There are a few scattered burl bud clusters.

This block has been air dried to 10-12% moisture content. I see no cracks or checks.  There is one small bug borehole visible on a face.  You could turn it off or choose to fill with CA glue.
