Mesquite Block M-780
1-1/2"x 1-1/2"x 9"
1/2 lb.
This is another very nice end-grain block of burly Texas Honey Mesquite. It is entirely the rich, reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood. There are at least three large clusters of burly buds that that influenced the otherwise linear grain pattern to result in a tightly-swirling pattern for much of the block.
I see no cracks, checks or other structural flaws. There is one prominent spot of included bark associated with one of the burl bud patches (upper edge of the left side, top photo). That "spot" is actually mostly an open hole (decay of the included bark?) and is ~3/8" maximum diameter and ~3/16" deep. Located very close to an edge, it should turn off cleanly as the block is roughed to round
