Sycamore Spindles Sy-436x 1.8" x 1.8" x 6" 1.0 lbs. for the set of 2
This set includes two rough-sawn, end-grain spindles of American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis, the American planetree), cut to matching dimensions so you can turn a pair. Sycamore is maple-like in appearance, with tan sapwood and heartwood that runs a slightly darker tan to peach. These spindles are mostly sapwood, so they lean toward the lighter shades.
Sycamore has a fine, even texture and turns well with sharp tools. It can have some interlocked grain, so light finishing cuts will give you the smoothest surface. At 1.8" square and 6" long, these are a handy size for small projects, and having two matching pieces means you can turn a true pair or use the second as a spare.
Some ideas for this size:
- Honey dippers and small tool handles
- Bud vases, weed pots, and tiny candlesticks
- Finials, ornaments, and bottle stoppers
- Spinning tops and other toys for kids
- Practice spindles for learning beads, coves, and tapers
Both spindles have been air-dried to a moisture content of 10-12% and are ready to turn. Photos represent this size of spindle, and the pair you receive may not be the exact pieces shown.
