This is a nice end-grain block of Slippery Elm (aka Red Elm).  It has a beautiful warmth to the wood, with color of light reddish-brown with a few charcoal-colored streaks. The grain on this piece is long and straight, slightly inclined to the long axis.

It's been air-dried to a moisture content of 10-12%.

There are a few scattered small knots that add character to the grain.There is a bit of wane along one edge and corner that will turn off as  you bring the block to round.
