Bodark Block B-638
2" x 2" x 8-5/8"
~1-1/2 lbs.
This is another, interesting block of Texas Bodark. The basic color is the golden brown with reddish spalting streaks. This block is somewhat different in that it includes a large, irregular area of very dark black/brown color in the central portion of one edge and both adjacent sides (bottom photo and right edge of top photo). There also is a small, partially-filled irregular (borer?) hole in the central portion of that brown area, and two much smaller, but similar holes on one edge. I do not know the cause or significance of that colored area and the associated holes, but I see no evidence of degradation of the wood in that area.
In addition, the remains of an old, shallow, black-stained crack is present along the central portion of one edge (top photo). That crack and most (if not all of the brown-stained area) will be removed if this block is to be turned to round. I see no other significant flaws.
