Bodark Block B-487 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" x 8-3/8" 2 lb. This is another nice spindle block of lightly spalted Texas Bodark. The colors are the golden brown of mature Bodark with intra-grain bands and elongated patches of reddish brown spalting. The block was cut from very close to the pith of the log and the tail-end of a pith-related, spalt-stained, radial crack is present on one edge of the end grain face (bottom photo, left side). That crack appears to be shallow at both ends and should turn off with minimal loss of the finished diameter. In addition, there are two very tight drying checks in the opposite end of the block (top photo, end grain face, but the checks are too thin to be visible). I would reinforce those two checks with thin CA glue before turning. I see no other significant flaws. |
