Bodark Block B-484
1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 9-1/8"
1 lb.
This is another nice 1-1/2"-square end-grain block of lightly spalted Texas Bodark. The primary color is the golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood with inter-grain bands and shading of light reddish spalting. That golden-yellow color will, over the course of time and exposure to air and light, gradually change to a darker orange-brown and ultimately to a beautiful dark, golden brown.
I was cut well away from the pith of the log and no significant pith-related cracks are present. However, there is one (or two?) small and very tight crack on one edge (upper left edge, top photo) that is likely the very tail end of an old radial crack located outside the limits of this block. Located on the edge of the block, that crack should turn off completely as the block is roughed to round. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.
