Red Oak Block RO571
3.7" x 3.7" x 6.8"
2.3 lbs.
Red oak turning block. This is an end-grain block with the grain running generally parallel to the long axis of the piece, making it a strong and stable choice for turning. The grain is naturally figured, showing attractive variations where the growth rings shift with the rhythms of the tree’s growth and changing moisture conditions.
This block has a curving wane face, as shown in the photos, which appears to be entirely in the wastage area (which will turn away completely during the shaping process). The block is rough-cut and unsanded, giving turners and carvers the freedom to shape and refine the piece to their own vision. Our oak blocks have been air-dried slowly and evenly; moisture content is below 10%. This helps minimize the risk of cracking or movement once work begins.
One end of the block has some radial drying-related cracks that tip out shortly within the block. If you wish to turn through these, you'll want to fill with CA glue prior to turning. Block is discounted because of the drying cracks.
