Douglas Fir Block DF-13
3.7" x 3.8" x 7.2"
2 lbs.

This is a slow-growth block of Douglas Fir from the San Juan Islands of Washington. The growth rings are exceptionally closely-spaced, similar to the rings seen in Old Growth lumber. This is due to the San Juan archipelago being in the rain shadow of the Olympic Peninsula. Total annual rain on the San Juans is approximately 25 inches, as compared to the 100+ inches received in the Olympic Mountains. The trees here are generally secondary growth and what we refer to as "slow growth" with their tight growth ring spacing.

The color on this Douglas Fir is a warm warm reddish-brown with a hint of orange. The growth rings are exceptionally finely-spaced, with ~15 years of growth present in each radial inch of lumber.

This block has been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content.  There is one concave wane edge as shown in the photos.
