This end grain block of Texas Mesquite is 90% heartwood. Its color is the beautiful deep reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood with a bit of sapwood and bark along the edges. This block has some beautiful figure to it thanks to one large and several small branch knots; see close-ups for detail. The "wet" photos show what it may look like when finished. We use alcohol to dampen the wood safely.
 
This block has been fully air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. The block includes pith that has small cracks. If you wish to keep the pith in your project, we recommend filling any open cracks with CA glue. There is one large knot that has a bark inclusion; you may wish to use CA glue to stabilize the bark if using it for a turning project.
