Mesquite Block M-1014 2" x 2" x 21.8" 2.6 lbs. This is a long, rough-sawn end-grain block of Mesquite. It's 90% heartwood, 10% sapwood. The front labeled side of the block is mostly light-yellow sapwood. It is flexed inwards a bit, with the natural curvature of the tree, so that this is not entirely a square block. The color is the deep reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood. There is no sapwood visible in this block. The grain is a very attractive, a combination of linear to gently undulating patterns on all sides. There are several burl buds that create swirling patterns in the grain. The block's front face is flexed inwards a bit, with the natural curvature of the tree's growth, so that this is not entirely a square block. I've attempted to highlight this in photo 3. There is also a shallow pocket of bark in the center of the sapwood on the front face. If you were to plane off all of the sapwood, you would be left with a 100% heartwood block with dimensions of 1.5"x 1.9"x 22". I see no other challenges or character marks in this block. |
