Slippery Elm Block SE-141 3.8" x 3.8" x 13.7" 5.6 lbs. This is a nice end-grain block of Slippery Elm (aka Red Elm). It has a beautiful warmth to the wood, with color of light reddish-brown. There is a bit of lighter-toned sapwood along one face, as shown in the photos. The grain on this piece is long and straight on two faces, gently swirling on the other two faces. There a few incipient branch buds that that the grain swirls around. The block is slightly spalted, with some attractive gray lines parallel to the grain direction. This piece would be suitable for flat our round work. It's been air-dried to a moisture content of 10-12%. There are a few minor bug holes and a couple of fine end-grain checks. See photos for close-ups of these features (scroll down below the first 3 photos). |
