This is an end-grain spindle of aged and spalted Texas Bodark.  It has the deep golden-orange of aged Bodark heartwood with the darker hues of spalting.  Once you work with this block, the freshly exposed surfaces will deepen in color with light and air exposure.

This block has an open crack that is visible as a spalted streak on one of the faces. You should fill it with thin CA glue prior to turning, which stabilizes the crack and give you full use of the block.

This block has been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content.
